Not of This World

It is easy to get caught up in the intensity of political campaigns, debates, and all the polarizing opinions that surround them. You may have strong feelings about one side or the other. Many people are making statements, in person or online, that push away anyone who disagrees with them. But as Christians, we need to remember that while we care about what happens in our country, we have an even more important loyalty that comes first.

When Jesus was brought before Pilate just before He was crucified, Pilate asked Him if He was the king of the Jews. Many people thought the Messiah would get involved in politics and defeat the Roman government. But Jesus explained that His kingdom is greater than any government or conflict on earth.

“My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus. “If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” John 18:36, CSB.

As followers of Jesus, our first loyalty is to His kingdom. Politics can change the world around us, but the gospel changes hearts forever.

Instead of getting caught up in arguments and losing friendships over political opinions that really don’t actually affect anything in eternity, let’s show the peace, love, and truth of Jesus in everything we say and do.

Jesus is coming soon and our greatest goal should be to do whatever is necessary to point people to Jesus so they can fall in love with Him just like we have and be ready to go to the eternal kingdom Jesus was talking about.

In the coming months, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus and His kingdom, and share the gospel with the love and urgency He has given us.
